Veteran participation in London Remembrance Day

It’s an event that has been steeped in tradition since it began in the 1920s and remains an important way to honour the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our freedom. UK and Commonwealth veterans from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and Merchant Navy are invited to be part of the parade.

Remembrance Sunday in London

Whilst Armistice Day is marked on November 11th each year, Remembrance Day falls on the second Sunday of the month. It centres around a two-minute silence for the fallen that begins when Big Ben’s bells chime at 11am.

The ceremony contains rousing music, including the stirring Last Post bugle call, and is televised to the nation each year. Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms and display their medals as the Armed Forces come together as one.

Taking part in the veterans parade

Participation in the veterans parade is organised by the Royal British Legion, which primarily allocates places through service and unit associations. Once these organisations have made their requests, any unused tickets are offered to non-member veterans.

Veterans from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and the Merchant Navy can apply for these tickets on a first come first served basis. Only those who meet the following criteria can take part in the veterans parade:

Ex-service personnel and civilians who have served.
Wives, husbands or civil partners of those who have died as a result of their service in the Armed Forces.
Carers of veterans requiring wheelchair assistance.

Veterans can join the crowds lining Whitehall and Parliament Street without a ticket or pass, but should be aware that entry could be limited if the area reaches capacity.

Travelling to Remembrance Day in London

All serving military personnel and veterans can travel for free by train to Remembrance Day events. This includes alighting at any London terminal the day before the service and parade. Showing a Veterans Railcard, a Veterans Oyster card or Veteran ID Card will prove eligibility.
