LISSETTE’S JOURNEY: FROM MILITARY SERVICE TO A FULFILLING CAREER AT NATIONAL GRID

A Strong Foundation in the Military Lissette’s military career spans an impressive 29 years, beginning with six years of active-duty service in the US Air Force. Following her active duty, she transitioned to the Air National Guard, where she continued to serve as a Reservist. This commitment to her country has instilled in her a sense of pride and purpose that she carries into her civilian life.
When Lissette left active duty, she was not ready to sever her ties with the military. Instead, she chose to join the Air National Guard, allowing her to continue serving while pursuing her personal and professional goals. This decision reflects her dedication to her country and her desire to remain connected to the values and camaraderie of military service.
Navigating Civilian Life
Upon transitioning to civilian life, Lissette faced the challenges that many veterans encounter. She moved back home to be closer to her family and enrolled in university full-time with a goal to becoming an Officer, as she recognised that obtaining a degree was essential to achieving that dream.
Lissette’s journey into the civilian workforce began when she graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. It was during this time that she discovered National Grid. Attracted by the opportunity to work in her field, she applied for a position and was thrilled to join a company that aligned with her professional aspirations.
Finding a Home at National Grid
Since joining National Grid, Lissette has found not only a job but a supportive community that values her contributions. Embracing the company’s culture and the opportunities it provides for personal and professional growth, Lissette’s experience at National Grid has been transformative, allowing her to expand her horizons and develop her leadership skills. As the Chair of VERG, Lissette has been instrumental in ensuring that the group supports both National Grid employees and the broader veteran community. Under her guidance, VERG has established a collaborative partnership with Human Resources to create a pipeline for veterans seeking employment at National Grid. This initiative has been crucial in supporting the onboarding of veterans, whether they are new hires or returning from deployment.
A Commitment to Veterans
One of the significant achievements during Lissette’s tenure has been the successful integration and signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by the UK chapter of VERG. This covenant signifies National Grid’s commitment to treating veterans and their families fairly, reinforcing the company’s dedication to supporting those who have served. With membership in VERG growing by over 50%, the group now serves a community of more than 800 members. This growth reflects the effectiveness of Lissette’s leadership and the importance of creating a welcoming environment for veterans within the organisation. Additionally, VERG has become a principal sponsor for the Veterans in Energy Leadership Forum, further enhancing National Grid’s involvement in advocating for veterans in the energy sector.

Lissette’s journey serves as an inspiration toother veterans considering a transition to civilian life. She believes that the skills acquired in the military—such as adaptability, teamwork, and leadership—are invaluable assets in the corporate world. Lissette emphasises that any job at National Grid can translate well for those with a military background, whether in engineering, administrative roles, communications, IT, or technical positions.
Her experience with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives at National Grid has also been positive. Lissette has witnessed significant changes in the company’s approach to DEI since her arrival, with the establishment of a dedicated DEI department that provides robust support for all employees. She feels that this commitment to inclusivity has created an environment where everyone can thrive.
